This 7 Km Pilgrim Path follows ancient paths leading to the church in Kilcommon village in North Tipperary. On minor roadways, forestry roads and cross country it traverses the Bilboa River valley and takes in the forested lower slopes of Mauherslieve Mountain and open hillside. There are wonderful views of the Tipperary and Limerick countryside along the way.
Start. From Limerick take the N7 for Dublin and then the R50, signposted Newport. Continue through the villages of Newport and Rear Cross until the Cross Bar appears on the left. Go left immediately onto a minor road that leads directly to Kilcommon village. The trailhead is outside the Community Centre where there is ample parking.(900 600)
Time. Allow about 2 hours to complete the loop and about another 1.5 hours to ascend Mauherslieve.
Distance. 7 Km
Suitability. This is an easy route following well-maintained tracks with a total ascent of just 170m. It is, however, wet in places around the Bilboa River so good, waterproof boots are a definite requirement.
